Data sources

What you see on OZRK comes from four kinds of sources. Each is labeled in the product so you know how much weight to give it.

Official or agency data Official source

Published by government agencies. The agency’s own publication is authoritative.

  • Arkansas GIS Office: state trails (Arkansas State Parks and Natural Heritage Commission), Ozark-St. Francis National Forest trails, recreation sites and boundaries, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife management areas, facilities, hunting rules areas, fish attractors and access, FAA airports, and county assessor parcel boundaries and records. Source
  • USGS The National Map: basemap, shaded relief, contour lines and labels, imagery, hydrography and place names. Source
  • National Weather Service (NOAA): forecasts, alerts and radar. Source
  • USGS Water Data: provisional stream and lake gauge readings. Source
  • NIFC wildfire data (WFIGS): active wildfire incidents. Source
  • FCC: antenna structures and 2021 Form 477 LTE coverage (provider-reported). Source
  • Arkansas Game and Fish Commission: hunting and fishing rules are linked, not copied; check the current guidebooks. Source

Open and public datasets Open data

Compiled by others and published openly; completeness varies.

  • OpenStreetMap contributors: trails, campsites and water features, and routing data, under the Open Database License. Source
  • PAD-US (USGS Gap Analysis Project): protected and public lands. Source

OZRK-derived information OZRK-derived

Calculated or arranged by OZRK from the sources above. Not official, not verified, and not a guarantee.

  • Deer Score and Fishing Score: conditions-based estimates from forecast weather, light, wind and, for fishing, a nearby gauge’s water temperature when available. Bait ideas are general guidance.
  • Wind flow and forecast fields: interpolated between National Weather Service grid points for display.
  • Adventure Brief and map summaries: counts and context from the data in your view.
  • Parcel land-status reading (private, government-owned, public land): OZRK’s reading of the owner text and mapped public-land boundaries; not a legal determination and not an access guarantee.
  • Generalized map geometry at wide zoom for speed.

Community reports Community report

Observations from signed-in OZRK members. Unverified, short-lived and labeled “Community report”. Never official information.

  • Trail, hazard, wildlife, hunting, fishing and access observations with optional photos. Locations are shown rounded to about 100 m. Reports expire by category and can be flagged.

OZRK information can change or contain errors. Verify critical weather, access, property, hunting, fishing, road and safety information with the appropriate authoritative source before travel.
